The history of Nangpa la (5,716m) goes back about 800 years ago, when the Tibetan Khampa people (now called Sherpas) started to migrate west from eastern Tibet. This legendary trade route was crossed by the ancestors of present Sherpa several centuries ago before settling in the Everest region. Therefore, it stands as the legendry link between the Sherpa people of Nepal and their Tibetan counterparts.
