Tiji Festival Trekking is cultural adventure treks to mark the annual celebration of 3 days long Tiji Festival in the walled city of Lo Manthang (3730m), the capital of Mustang. Tiji festival consists of three-day of Tibetan rituals. The Tiji centers around a myth, which tells of a deity named Dorje Jono who must battle against his demon father to save the Kingdom of Mustang from destruction. Tiji comes from the word “ten che” meaning the hope of Buddha Dharma prevailing in all worlds and is effectively a spring renewal festival. Tiji festival trek is strenuous--need to be in good physical shape and not for those with fear of heights on narrow trails. Suitable for any energetic walker, horse rider, adventurer looking for a challenge. Does not require any previous trekking, mountaineering or horse riding experience, although daily jogging or walking exercise is necessary and you need to be in good physical condition able to walk 5-6 hours daily at high altitude in steep terrain. Adventure Connexion team trek the riverbank of the Kali Gandaki across from one of the greatest exposed uplifts of tectonic plates where the Indian plate rises beneath the Tibetan plateau. The trail is flat, barren, following the Kali Gandaki riverbed. Magnificent views of huge peaks such as Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, Nilgiri, and the entire Annapurna massif rise up to the south. Kagbeni with its narrow alleyways and tunnels, irrigation canals, fields of wheat and barley and a large red Gompa, give us a preview of scenes that we will discover in Upper Mustang. Amidst the blare of traditional long copper horns (dungchen) and the beatings of drums and cymbal, an enormous scroll painting (thanka) depicting Padmasambhava is unfurled on the south wall of the square. This thanka is said to be from 16th century, and is hand-embroidered with an image of Padmasambhava and 2 dakinis. After having offered incense, ngagpas or tantric practitioners, from Lo Manthang offer 6 bowls of grain and torma on a wooden avatar.
